Today I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday!
Here are some highlights from our week!
ONE: Plants
We continued our plant unit this week. This week I had my kiddos read about the different parts of a plant. Then they got to make a poster to teach the class about each part. They were great teachers this week!
We also watched videos about plant parts on Flocabulary and Harry's Kindergarten. The Flocabulary songs are so catchy and this kids LOVE them!
On Thursday we finally finished our seed experiments. The kids were AMAZED when they saw what happened to the seeds that had water and sunlight! I love teaching science in the primary grades... the kids are so excited about it!
TWO: Job Applications

TWO: Job Applications
A bunch of my kiddos have been asking me if they could have specific jobs in our classroom. This gave me an idea because we've been working on an opinion unit. I thought it would be neat for the kiddos to write about why they think they should get a job of their choice in our classroom. The kiddos did a nice job providing some reasons for why they're qualified for each of the jobs they chose... such a fun activity!
THREE: Adding and Subtracting Tens
THREE: Adding and Subtracting Tens
Adding and subtracting tens is my favorite math unit to teach. It's the culmination of every math unit we've done this year and the kiddos are so confident in math and ready to begin regrouping! This week we used a game and a hundreds charts as well as several strategies to add and subtract tens. I love to see what strategies the kids gravitate towards.
After teaching the kiddos different strategies (skip counting, using place value, 120 chart), we then introduced vertical addition. The kiddos loved this as they saw it as the easier way to add.
FOUR: Word Work
I love giving the kiddos different options to practice our spelling words. This week the kids used scrabble tiles to build our ou and ow words.
We also used our guided reading table to practice our spelling list... I love using the tables as white boards!
My kiddos also love using the clothespins to build their spelling words and then write a sentence for each word. I've added another element to this page to keep the kiddos engaged. After writing their sentences they need to illustrate each sentence. I'm so impressed by the quality of their sentences this time of the year!

FIVE: Sentences
I'm loving using interactive notebooks to introduce and practice using various ELA skills each week. One way we use our journals is to use our sight words in a sentence. I love all the different skills I can see in this activity. I also love to see the progression of the sentences from the beginning of the year until now... my kiddos are rocking these sentences!!
What a great tens activity! Our kids in my program have a hard time with them. They are still using fingers to tell what is ten more than 41. Thanks for sharing!

That job application idea is GENIUS! I am going to have to remember that for my first graders next year. The first graders at my current school did an opinion piece called "This Needs To Change!" They had to write an opinion piece of something they want changed at home or at school and why it should be changed. One student said he shouldn't have to brush his baby sisters teeth any more. So funny. I love these activities where students are very creative and individualized in what they write. :)
